The campus at the University of Maine at Fort Kent covers 52.5 acres of ground. Of that area, 14.5 acres are managed as a woodlot for use by UMFK's Forestry and Environmental Studies programs and for recreation. Several additional acres are in the Fish River flood plain and are maintained as a riparian buffer. The campus does not use chemical fertilizers or pest control compounds on its turf areas except for the soccer field, which is treated twice per year. Chemical pesticides are used occasionally as needed on woody specimens. Irrigation is not used on campus grounds except during the establishment period of new plantings.
The CRSD with input from Environmental Studies and Forestry faculty, students from the Campus Ecology Committee, and Facilities staff recently produced a sustainable landscape design as part of the Powell Hall renovation. The project currently is being evaluated for certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) through its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. The plan includes over 20 woody species native to Maine including several that bear edible fruit. The design also includes more trees and shrubs, self-mulching beds, and significantly reduced turf area, which will need less mowing and maintenance once established. Species selections were made with the curriculum in mind particularly as a living laboratory for Environmental Studies and Forestry students.
